Case: SkyView de Pier — Scheveningen
A 45-meter giant wheel mounted 8 meters above the North Sea is the reference nobody forgets.
SkyView de Pier sits on top of the iconic Pier of Scheveningen, 8 meters above the North Sea, equipped with closed climate-controlled gondolas, a VIP cabin with glass floor, an on-board kitchen for high-tea and dinner rides, and a complete online-to-offline ticket flow. For buyers it is the clearest possible proof that SkyView can place a premium observation product into an existing, heavily visited, open-water destination.

Project brief
Turn a famous coastal pier into a premium observation destination with its own hospitality offer.
The Pier of Scheveningen already had strong footfall, restaurants, terraces and a long tourism history. The brief for SkyView was to place a giant wheel that would be part of the pier itself — structurally, visually and commercially — rather than a stand-alone attraction next to it.
Crucially, the destination story had to be premium: closed comfortable cabins, unobstructed views of the sea and the skyline of The Hague, a VIP cabin with glass floor, and a commercial model that allowed more than just the standard ticket.
- Deliver a 45 meter giant wheel compatible with an elevated pier over open water.
- Use enclosed air-conditioned gondolas to extend the season beyond summer beach weather.
- Introduce premium tiers: VIP glass-floor cabin, high-tea and dinner ride formats with on-board kitchen.
- Create a clear path from destination discovery on city-tourism sites to direct booking on skyviewdepier.nl.
Supplied scope & engineering
Observation wheel + pier-interface engineering + premium cabin package + ticket flow.
SkyView supplied the 45-meter wheel system but also the destination logic around it: cabin package, VIP cabin, on-board kitchen, lighting program and the operating handover that lets staff run dining events, sunset rides and standard sightseeing tickets under one roof.
- SkyView SV45-series 45-meter giant wheel with closed air-conditioned gondolas and VIP glass-floor cabin.
- Pier interface engineering: structural connection scheme between wheel base frame and the elevated pier structure over the North Sea.
- Cabin interiors: comfortable seating, large viewing glass, UV protection, climate control for cool summers and heated winters.
- On-board hospitality kitchen and event-host integration for high-tea, dinner and private-ride formats.
- Wheel perimeter and gondola-ready LED lighting program coordinated with the pier evening identity.
- Ticketing, queue and guest flow handover integrated with skyviewdepier.nl, box office and partner resale.
Model & product
Based on the SkyView SV45 45-meter giant wheel platform with premium coastal package.
The de Pier wheel sits on the proven 45-meter SkyView giant wheel platform used in Rotterdam, Kaunas and many other city references — but with upgrades specific to an open-sea elevated pier: corrosion-protection details, closed gondolas as standard, VIP cabin, lighting coordination and an on-board hospitality layer.
- Model: SkyView SV45 giant wheel (45 m overall height, 40 m-class wheel diameter)
- Cabin count: 32 enclosed gondolas (incl. VIP glass-floor cabin)
- Capacity: 6 persons per standard gondola, 4–6 persons in VIP cabin
- Cycle time: approx. 8–12 minutes programmable (sightseeing mode vs slow dining mode)
Engineering challenge
Place a giant wheel on an elevated pier above the North Sea without compromising visitor comfort or structure.
Pier installations are a specific engineering class. The base frame sits on a structure that was not originally sized for a giant wheel; it exposes the system to coastal salt, wind and vibration; and guest access runs through a public leisure environment where the wheel must feel inviting, not industrial.
SkyView addressed these challenges with a dedicated structural interface study, environmental protection measures on exposed steel, smooth motion tuning and a premium cabin and lighting design that visually softens the machine into a hospitality asset.
- Pier-interface structural study: load paths, pier diaphragm connections and tolerances for the existing structure.
- Coastal-environment protection: corrosion class coating, drain details, exposed-component maintenance plan.
- Wind tunnel and operational envelope consistent with the SkyView wheel standard (operation up to 12 m/s; parked safe-stop well beyond that).
- Smooth friction-drive tuning to deliver a stable ride even with pier walkway vibration and sea wind around the cabin envelope.
- Guest-access integration with pier walkways, queue space and a hospitality/kitchen service node reachable from the platform.
Delivery timeline
From structural pier study to a publicly operating wheel on the coastline.
- Pier structural survey, load envelope study, base frame and foundation concept.
- Detail engineering: wheel platform, cabin order, pier connection, access scheme.
- Fabrication, protective coating, VIP cabin special fit-out and kitchen integration.
- Logistics onto the pier, staged assembly, cabling, lighting and commissioning.
- Public opening: ticket flow, staff training, VIP cabin and dining event pilots.
- Operating handover with scheduled maintenance programme and spare-parts agreement.
Installation method
A carefully phased pier build that preserved public access around other pier venues.
The Pier of Scheveningen hosts restaurants, terraces, events and shops, so installation was phased to minimize disruption to other tenants. SkyView coordinated the heavy lifts, working windows and temporary barriers with the pier operator and kept the site footprint tight.
- Coordination with pier operator: dates, public-access routes, heavy-lift window.
- Base frame and pier interface installed in advance of main wheel assembly.
- Rim, spokes and hub assembled in stages; gondolas lifted onto the wheel once main structure confirmed.
- Kitchen node, platform railings, ticket/queue area and lighting completed.
- Commissioning: empty runs, cabin load-test, VIP and dinner-ride dry runs.
- Public opening and staff on-site training period with SkyView supervisors.
Certification & standards
EN 13814-aligned engineering plus coastal-environment structural discipline.
The de Pier wheel shares the SkyView standard certification and documentation philosophy. In addition, its exposed location required a structured approach to protective coating, drainage and long-term maintenance planning.
- Structural and mechanical engineering executed per EN 13814 direction, with TÜV NORD-compatible documentation and type-examination mindset.
- Dutch structural & electrical install standards followed for the pier-interface works.
- Coastal corrosion protection plan, maintenance intervals and inspection checkpoints for exposed structural elements.
- Operator training, emergency procedures, safety I/O and handover documentation set.
Operating result & public proof
A 12-month-a-year coastal wheel with premium tiers, 2+ million pier visitors, and CNN-listed destination context.
SkyView de Pier benefits from a globally recognized pier destination with two million plus yearly visitors. The closed gondola package extends its season well into the autumn, winter and spring, while VIP and dinner-ride tiers lift yield beyond the standard ticket.
- Destination context: Pier of Scheveningen listed by CNN as one of the most beautiful piers in the world.
- Public product: closed air-conditioned gondolas, VIP glass-floor cabin, sunset, dinner and high-tea packages.
- Third-party coverage: DenHaag.com, Scheveningen.com ferris wheel listings, direct ticket pages referencing skyviewdepier.nl.
- Clear commercial model: standard ticket → VIP cabin → dinner ride → private hire → event partnerships.
- Year-round opening enabled by the heated and air-conditioned closed gondolas.

Destination operator frame
Why the combination of location + closed cabin + premium tiering makes the case.
A wheel on the pier is not a summer-only fairground item. With closed gondolas, a VIP glass floor cabin, dinner rides and 2+ million yearly visitors around it, SkyView de Pier becomes a 12-month premium hospitality asset that pays back the pier investment in visibility every single day.
